NDIC Publishes Healthy Eating and Medication Booklets in Spanish
Health care workers and their Spanish-speaking patients with diabetes
can now learn more about the foods they should eat and details about diabetes
medications. The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) has
produced four easy-to-read publications in Spanish. These booklets were
designed and illustrated for easy comprehension and include interactive
pages to help educators and patients improve diabetes management.
The three nutrition booklets are
Tengo Diabetes: ¿Qué Debo Comer?
(I Have Diabetes: What Should I Eat?)
Uses the food pyramid to outline which foods to include and which to
avoid in a healthy diet. Offers suggestions for healthier ways to cook
and serve foods. Interactive pages help patients and educators assess
food intake and changes needed to improve diabetes management.
Tengo Diabetes: ¿Cuánto Debo Comer?
(I Have Diabetes: How Much Should I Eat?)
Teaches the correct portion size as well as how to fulfill caloric needs
with the proper number of servings. Provides tips for measuring foods
in each group in the food pyramid. Interactive pages help patients and
educators create a custom food pyramid and develop sample meal plans.
Tengo Diabetes: ¿Cuándo Debo Comer?
(I Have Diabetes: When Should I Eat?)
Emphasizes the importance of a consistent meal-and-medication schedule
in order to achieve good blood glucose control.
The medications booklet is
Medicamentos Para las Personas Con Diabetes
(Medicines for People with Diabetes)
Discusses insulins and oral diabetes medications, including recently
approved preparations.
NDIC is currently preparing a seven-booklet series on diabetes complications
and self-management skills, which will be ready in the fall of 1999.
If you want to order from the series, use the online catalog.
